Kitchen & Laundry Room

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK

"It can be easy being green"

You know a project’s going to be good when you receive a Facebook message from a good college friend telling you know that they are looking to do some remodeling, and after enjoying a Sunday afternoon cocktail, they decided ‘let’s reach out to Laura!’. And guys, this was a FUN project that yielded such a stunning transformation. Maybe Sunday afternoon cocktails are the secret catalyst to all good ideas?

Our clients are a super fun young couple that live in Oklahoma City in a home built in 1923. They have two young children and a very active family life. The previous Kitchen, Dining, and Breakfast Nook areas were not meshing well together - everything was walled-off from eachother, making it hard to entertain and enjoy daily living in the way they wanted to. The layout of the Kitchen was not efficient, lacked storage, and had some funny quirks that homes built in this time period are bound to have.

After living in these inefficient spaces for several years, our clients had a real sense of what they were looking for. They wanted to knock down the wall between the Kitchen and the Dining Room to create a more open and connected feel. Incorporating a pantry into the Kitchen for additional storage was a must. Despite the large footprint of the Kitchen, storage was very limited. Adding a Bar area somewhere in the Kitchen was on the wishlist, and I’m so glad we were able to make this happen (again, hello Sunday afternoon cocktails!). Converting the adjacent, underutilized Breakfast Area into a Laundry Room / walk-in Pantry was a great used of that dead space. Including an island in the Kitchen with a few counter stools has also been great for quick casual meals for the kids.
We worked with the client’s contractor Bryan Lee to make this design come to life! Custom cabinetry in our favorite shade of green and white sets the tone for a dramatic, rich space. The old Kitchen had turquoise cabinetry and trimwork everywhere - so moving to a different shade of green was not shocking at all to this client. We used hand-formed subway tile in a rich, glossy white to add subtle texture and sheen to the space, with a simple marbled quartz countertop. Custom wine storage, antique mirror backsplash, and an undercounter wine refrigerator set the tone for a successful Bar area. We discovered that the column next to the Bar was brick covered in plaster, so we just exposed it! That added texture and character brings so much life to this corner. We incorporated open, live-edge shelving to the coffee corner of the Kitchen, allowing our client to style this area with different ceramics, artwork, plants, and other decor. She really has such great style - what a dream!

The adjacent Laundry Room / Pantry carries a lot of the same elements over from the Kitchen. Clean, white custom cabinetry and millwork house a stacked washer / dryer, and allows for additional storage for cleaning supplies. We even had room for a spacious window seat! I’m told the kids love to curl up here after school and that makes me so happy. I’m so jealous of their beautiful Laundry Room (this is a sign that I am officially an adult!)

We tackled this project 100% remotely. Through email, Pinterest, Houzz, Facetime, text, Fedex packages, and solid communication between us, the Clients, and the Contractor, we were able to create the Kitchen of their dreams without incurring costly site visits or other travel expenses. What a blessing modern technology is! I can’t reiterate enough how fun this space was to design with this client and their contractor.

What Our Client Says

We absolutely love our new kitchen and laundry room that Laura and Outline Interiors designed for us! She was so wonderful to work with— incredibly competent, creative, and hardworking. We were particularly impressed with how well she seemed to understand our style, as well as the style of our old home. She was able to take all of our crazy ideas and turn them into a final product that feels beautifully modern and functional, while still connecting to the history of the home. Laura was also our advocate through the entire process, including the demo and remodel, and didn’t mind being the “bad guy” to ensure we got exactly what we wanted. We loved working with Outline Interiors and would definitely do it again!
